Oro Bailén Picual is one of the most legendary olive oils in the world. It has won the Mario Solinas Competition, the International Olive Council's selection of the world's best olive oils, twice: first in 2012 and most recently last year.
Especially due to its Picual olives, the producer Oro Bailén is considered one of the most awarded olive oil producers in the world . Most recently, it was named the world's best olive mill by World's Best Olive Oils. Anyone who speaks with owner José Gálvez González understands why: the pursuit of the perfect oil. While the goal may remain unattainable, the very fact that they strive to get as close as possible to it is the reason for the consistently high quality of Oro Bailén olive oils.
In 2020, it achieved first place in the – admittedly questionable – olive oil test by Kassensturz .
FLOS OLEI 2025 lists Oro Bailén with 99 out of 100 possible points. Too few, considering the names of the top-ranked teams.
Points and awards aside, Oro Bailén Picual is a very good olive oil that, because of its simplicity, can be used boldly every day in practically any kitchen – especially in Mediterranean cuisine.
While the oil's character has evolved over the years from an untamed green elixir, bitter and extremely pungent, to an approachable, almost sweet juice , José Gálvez believes this is how Picual should taste. The earlier style was too Tuscan. Green and sweet is therefore the direction. Green and bitter is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, both styles won the coveted Mario Solinas competition.
It's not just the immense competitive success that sets Oro Bailén apart from other top producers, but also the production volume. An incredible 266 tons of Picual cheese are available at the start of the harvest sales. No other producer achieves anything comparable. This demonstrates one thing: José Gálvez understands his craft like no other.
